There are many beautiful hikes in Virginia, but this one is a favorite of ours. Crabtree Falls is a hike out in Nelson County and it is named for its amazing waterfalls that fall over 1200 feet. This Virginia hike is great in any season, each one giving you a much different perspective. At the top, you will have a stunning view of the mountains around you.
What To Bring to Crabtree Falls
When we go for a hike, we always bring a backpack with plenty of water, tissues, change of shoes and snacks. We have small children and they always need a snack or some “energy” when we go so I usually put together some baggies with portable snacks such as goldfish, pretzels, and almonds.
My husband and I like to bring beef jerky, too. These are perfect little sticks that are individually wrapped or you could just bring some jerky strips in a bag. I love it because it’s light and doesn’t take up much space and it’s a quick protein snack.
Crabtree Falls Parking
This parking lot has a box to pay $5 when you arrive. There are two levels to the parking lot but sometimes the top level is full. There is more parking in the lower lot but there have been times that we have had to be creative in making a spot because this hike can be very popular.
Starting the hike
Not far from the parking lot, you will come across your first waterfall. This is a perfect place for a picture before you begin your ascent and the family gets a bit tired! Be careful to stay on the path and off the rocks.
Going up the mountain
This hike is a steep, switchback trail that is just under two miles up the mountain. The whole way up there is a clear dirt path or stone steps that will lead you on your way.
There are a few benches to rest on and several large rock structures. The kids really love the rocks and taking their time.
During the hike, there will be several spots where you will want to get off the path and explore. There are creeks and so much beauty.
As you ascend, there are several spots where you will have beautiful views of the cascades. Take your time and enjoy it!
As you get closer to the top, the trail begins to get a little muddy and wet. I would recommend some water proof hiking boots and thick socks for this hike.
It usually takes us around 4 hours to go up, have lunch and get back down but it depends on how much time we take to just enjoy the view and the amount of foot traffic.
The top of the hike
When you get to the top of of the mountain, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the mountains around you and it is stunning! We like to pack a picnic lunch for the top and sit by the water on a large rock. This gives us a break and a chance to recharge. The kids love it and we get to people watch.
Different Seasons at Crabtree Falls
We have found that an unseasonably nice day is one of the busiest days to go to the falls. One of the busiest times we went was in the early spring.
If you go in the winter, the leaves have fallen from all the trees and you will have a view of the water the whole way up the mountain and you will hear it very clearly.
In the spring, it obviously isn’t as hot and you will see all the new growth but I would recommend layers.
Summertime is a great time to go because visitors are more spread out. Since this hike is on a mountain, it doesn’t get as hot as it would in other places. It is shaded and cool and the breezes from the water are refreshing.
Fall is a gorgeous time to visit because of the leaves changing and the crisp feel of the air. Basically, there is no bad season to visit Crabtree Falls!
Leaving Crabtree Falls
If you head West on Crabtree Falls Highway, you will notice a little general store when you get out of the woods called Montebello Country Store. It’s a great place to have a snack, get a drink or use the bathroom after the hike. Our kids love getting an ice cream bar and sitting out the picnic tables to enjoy it.
