Back Home on the Farm is our favorite Pumpkin Patch within an hour of Lexington, VA.
This fun spot is just outside of Harrisonburg, VA in the beautiful Shenandoah Valley. This place has so many different activities, the kids always want to come back, and so do we!
Back Home on the Farm Prices
When visiting the farm during the weekend, you will pay $12 per person, and $10 during the week.
Back Home on the Farm Discounts
Again, if you come during the week, you will pay $10 versus $12. Also, grandparents are half price with a grandchild and children under 2 are free.
Back Home on the Farm Hours
The farm is open Tuesday through Sundays and the hours vary based on the day.
Tuesday-Friday: 3-5
Saturday: 10am-6pm
Sunday: Noon-6pm
Back Home on the Farm General Store
When you first set foot in Back Home on the Farm, you will notice a large display of pumpkins and the General Store. This store has many local products, bathrooms (important), and several snacks. This is a great place to grab some fudge, cookie or even an apple slushie. Also, it’s fun to just browse and see what they have to offer.
Food
There are several places to purchase food once you get in. As mentioned above, the general store has several snacks and treats, but there is also a food truck inside the farm. This food truck has burgers and even fresh doughnuts.
Be prepared
As a mom, I always like to bring extra snacks, especially since the kids will be running around. Also, be mindful of the weather as it can change quickly in the valley. A cozy sweater (like this one) can keep you warm and would also be nice for pictures. My kids also love dressing for the occasion, and a top like this would be perfect for a fall day at the pumpkin patch.
Back Home on the Farm Activities
There are many activities to keep families busy at this farm and here is a list of most of them.
Mini Golf
There is a bin next to the course with putters for any size golfer. It is also next to a small greenhouse where kids can walk through.
Large Tube Slide
Next, there is an old fashioned slide that families will enjoy. Guests can go down in twos in a burlap sack and the slide is dark and bumpy!
Back Home on the Farm Carousel
The carousel is one thing I really feel sets this pumpkin patch apart from others. This carousel is smaller so only kids can ride, but the horses are decorated with Virginia’s historical figures. We especially love seeing the James Madison horse.
Back Home on the Farm Racing Pigs
Crowds gather a few times a day to watch the pigs race for an oreo. This is a fun event as many people have never seen pigs race and it’s just cute seeing pigs race. You can just watch but they encourage you to cheer on your favorite pig.
Petting Zoo
A newer exhibit on the farm is a small petting zoo. There are goats, llamas, chickens, bunnies and other animals set up where kids can pet them and enjoy their company.
McDonald’s Play pieces and zipline
Somehow, Back Home on the Farm has several pieces of former McDonald’s play area pieces along with plastic play houses. There are also several large tires and a zipline set up for kids to play with. If I remember correctly, there is even a tug of war set up so families can battle each other.
Slingshot
Next, the slingshot is a fun way to have a little competition. You are given a bucket with balls and you have to try to hit the cow in the field. Don’t worry, not a real cow!
Open Field Play
When you go down the hill, you will see obstacle courses, seesaws and duck racing. Also, you can find bowling, thinking games and spinning wheels. My dad especially likes that there are old tractors around the area. It is important to note that there are port a potties down here as the General Store is back up a hill.
Barrel Ride
Is it really a farm visit if you don’t ride in the empty barrels pulled by a 4 wheeler? This is always a hit with the kids and sometimes the parents even go for a ride, too.
Corn maze
There is a large corn maze set up near the front of the farm. This corn maze is fun, but a little difficult. We had a little trouble as we were going the same direction several times before we found the way out. I recommend a potty break before this attraction and make sure everyone isn’t tired!
Hay Ride
One thing we never miss is a hay ride before we leave the farm. Guests can take a seat behind a tractor and ride up the farm to the pumpkin patch. There is a stop at the top of the hill and guests can pick out any pumpkin or gourd they please. Just remember, you pay by the pound on the way out!
Overall Thoughts on Back Home on the Farm
In conclusion, this is our favorite pumpkin patch to go to in the fall. There are other events held here but we just go for the patch. We love getting to Harrisonburg any chance we can get and this pumpkin patch is a favorite of our kids.
The price seems fair for what you get and I always feel like I could spend more time there. The pumpkin fudge is a great treat, but there is something about getting a hot doughnut if you go on a cold day.
